Indian Railways has officially commenced trials for its maiden Vande Bharat Parcel (Cargo) Superfast Express. The prototype train, built by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, successfully clocked a speed of 145 km/h during its inaugural test run on July 29, 2026, in Kota, Rajasthan. This initiative marks a significant step toward revolutionizing the logistics sector by offering high-speed transit for time-sensitive cargo.

  • Train configuration: 16 coaches with a total payload capacity of 395 tons.
  • Testing grounds: Kota-Nagda-Sawai Madhopur section on the Delhi-Mumbai line.
  • Operational speed: Projected average of 80-90 km/h with peaks up to 130 km/h.
  • Focus: Catering to e-commerce, electronics, pharmaceuticals, and temperature-sensitive goods.

Rigorous Testing Protocols

According to Ananjay Mishra, Director (Testing) at the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO), the month-long trial period is designed to evaluate the train under both empty and loaded conditions. Engineers are meticulously testing traction, braking systems, and electrical safety. While the train is technically capable of hitting 160 km/h, current testing is being conducted incrementally at speeds of 120, 130, 135, and 145 km/h to ensure absolute stability and safety.

Advanced Features for Modern Logistics

The Vande Bharat Parcel Train is engineered to outperform traditional freight services, which typically average 60-70 km/h. The 16-coach rake features 14 high-capacity coaches capable of carrying 25 tons each, alongside two driver trailer coaches with a 20-ton capacity. To ensure seamless loading and unloading, the train is equipped with automated plug doors, mirroring the design of passenger Vande Bharat Express rakes.

Beyond speed, the RDSO is conducting comprehensive safety inspections. This includes verifying coupler force, wheel lateral load, and curve performance. Furthermore, the train’s internal systems—including CCTV, public address systems, and advanced thermal capacity monitoring—are undergoing strict scrutiny to meet the requirements of modern supply chains. With this development, Indian Railways aims to provide a reliable, high-speed backbone for the country’s growing e-commerce and pharmaceutical markets.
