The iconic Shimla Railway Station has been officially re-included in the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, paving the way for a major infrastructure transformation. This development aims to modernize the station with state-of-the-art amenities, including escalators and shopping malls, while balancing the preservation of its historic heritage. The project was previously paused due to concerns raised by the Heritage Committee and UNESCO regarding the world heritage status of the Kalka-Shimla rail line. Furthermore, a dedicated Railway Ministry team is slated to visit the route soon to assess additional stations for potential integration into this modernization roadmap.
Key highlights of the recent developments include:
- Shimla Station modernization: Re-inclusion in the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme to enhance passenger facilities.
- Landslide restoration: The Kalka-Shimla track was successfully restored on August 19, 2026, after a landslide hit the section between Koti, Gumman, and Taradevi.
- Passenger safety: The Indian Army successfully evacuated 172 passengers from train number 52458 (Kalka-Shimla Express) after it was stranded near Koti.
- Service status: While some trains resumed on Wednesday, six trains remain cancelled for Thursday, August 20, 2026, with full service resumption expected from August 21.
- Investment boost: The government has allocated ₹2716 crore for Himachal Pradesh railway projects in the 2025-26 fiscal year.
Restoration and Service Updates
The Kalka-Shimla route faced a major disruption following a landslide on August 18, 2026. Yashanjeet Singh, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager for the Ambala Rail Division, confirmed that although two stranded trains were safely dispatched from Shimla to Kalka on Wednesday, the network is still stabilizing. As of now, three up and three down trains are cancelled for August 20. The Railway Board is closely monitoring the situation to ensure a smooth return to full operations effective August 21, 2026.
A Broader Vision for Himalayan Rail Travel
This infrastructure push is part of a larger commitment to elevate the passenger experience in Himachal Pradesh. The current efforts follow a successful trial conducted in December 2025, which showcased a new tourism-focused train equipped with large panoramic windows and enhanced comfort features. With a significant budget of ₹2716 crore earmarked for the region, Indian Railways is focused on creating a seamless blend of heritage conservation and modern travel convenience for commuters and tourists alike.
