Indian Railways is taking a massive leap toward becoming a global rail manufacturing hub as RITES Limited, the export arm of the national transporter, begins work on a standard-gauge prototype of the Vande Bharat train. While current domestic operations utilize broad-gauge tracks, this shift to standard gauge is a strategic move to align with international rail infrastructure requirements. RITES Chairman and Managing Director Rahul Mithal has confirmed that discussions are currently underway to fast-track the development of this prototype, aimed at countries that have already expressed interest in India’s semi-high-speed rail technology.

Positioning India as a Global Rail Exporter
By moving away from being a technology importer to a global supplier, India aims to capitalize on the cost-effectiveness and proven reliability of the Vande Bharat platform. Officials believe that the train’s ability to offer high-speed performance at a significantly lower capital cost makes it a compelling alternative for global rail operators. While India may continue to supply broad-gauge units to neighboring countries with compatible infrastructure, the new standard-gauge version is the cornerstone of the government’s long-term export strategy.
Scaling Domestic Production
Even as the export roadmap takes shape, the domestic production of Vande Bharat trains remains in full swing. The Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai is currently ramping up its manufacturing capacity to produce **50 rakes of 24-coach Vande Bharat Sleeper trains**. This surge in manufacturing, combined with the successful operational history of existing chair car services, provides the necessary confidence and data-backed performance metrics required to attract international buyers. As India prepares to showcase its engineering prowess on the world stage, the Vande Bharat train is set to become the flagship symbol of the nation’s “Make in India” success story in the global railway sector.
