Indian Railways expects a significant jump in earnings due to increased maize production in the Seemanchal region. For the current financial year 2025-26, the revenue from maize transportation is estimated to reach around 50 crore rupees. To support this growth, the railway is planning to increase the number of rack points on the Katihar-Jogbani section.
What are the revenue and transport details?
Last year, the railways earned about 40 crore rupees from 59 maize racks sent from Purnia Junction to South India and Bangladesh. In total, across three rack points including Ranipatra, Purnia Junction, and Jalalgarh, about 150 racks were transported, bringing in over 1 billion rupees. This year, maize cultivation has expanded to over 1.25 lakh hectares in Purnia and other districts like Katihar, Araria, and Kishanganj.
What are the new infrastructure updates?
To improve transport capacity, the railway is working on adding another rack point on the Katihar-Jogbani route. Additionally, the doubling of the Katihar-Jogbani rail section has been approved with an estimated cost of 1799.82 crore rupees. Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Anup Kumar Singh confirmed that the final location survey is complete and the report has been sent to the Railway Board.
