Completion of New Railway Line
Another phase of construction of the 5th and 6th railway lines between Bandra Terminus (BDTS) and Borivali (BVI) has been successfully completed with the commissioning of the new 6th line between Goregaon and Kandivali. Following this development, a total of 34 mail and express trains are now operating in the up direction, while 30 trains are running in the down direction on this newly opened section. However, the segment between Khar Road (KILE) and Borivali remains incomplete, limiting the full utilization of both lines. Once the entire 5th and 6th lines are operational, the new infrastructure is expected to significantly enhance line capacity, alleviate congestion, and improve train punctuality.
Operational Improvements and Future Plans
Vineet Abhishek, Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, indicated that the new lines would help minimize disruptions to suburban train operations during any faults or mega blocks on the main corridor between Andheri (ADH) and Borivali. The Western Railway has plans to extend the sixth line to Borivali by December 2024, which will further enhance the operation of local trains between Churchgate and Borivali. Additionally, new services have been introduced, including one fast service from Churchgate to Nalasopara and multiple slow services catering to various routes, meeting the local demand.
Implementation of New Timetable
A new timetable is set to be implemented on the Western Railway starting October 12. With this update, the number of local trains will rise from 1394 to 1406, including the addition of 12 new local services. Among the new services in the up direction, one fast service will operate from Virar to Churchgate, with several slow services connecting Dahanu Road to Virar and Andheri, Goregaon, and Borivali to Churchgate. Furthermore, existing services are being upgraded, increasing the number of 12-coach services to 15-coach services, raising the total from 199 to 209.
