The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has officially launched a redesigned beta version of its online ticket booking website, aimed at providing a seamless experience for millions of passengers. Rolled out on July 15, 2026, at 9 PM, this update marks a major shift in how users interact with the portal. Currently, both the legacy website and the new beta version are operational, allowing passengers to log in using their existing credentials to explore the new interface.
- Unified Seat View: Passengers can now see availability for all classes, including Sleeper, AC 3 Tier, and AC 2 Tier, on a single screen.
- Enhanced Speed: The system is built to process over 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute, a significant jump from the previous 32,000 capacity.
- User-Centric Design: Developed with input from MNIT Jaipur students, the interface removes clutter like unnecessary captchas and pop-ups.
- Smart Features: Includes a fare calendar for date comparisons and saved passenger profiles for quicker checkouts.
A User-Friendly Approach to Ticketing
Following feedback from students regarding booking delays, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw pushed for these structural improvements. The new portal is designed to make the booking process as efficient as possible, which is particularly vital for Tatkal reservations where every second counts. By streamlining the checkout steps and allowing users to save passenger details, the platform minimizes the time spent on manual data entry.
Furthermore, the website now introduces a fare calendar, allowing travelers to compare ticket prices across different dates at a glance. Passengers can also specify preferred berth choices, such as lower or side berths, directly during the booking process. The system remains inclusive, offering support for multiple Indian languages and dedicated integration for concession bookings for Divyangjan, students, and patients.
Infrastructure and Future Outlook
While the website serves as the front end, the underlying Passenger Reservation System (PRS), which has served Indian Railways for nearly 40 years, is also undergoing a massive modernization. The new backend is being scaled to handle over 40 lakh enquiries per minute, ensuring stability during peak traffic periods. The current beta phase is a critical period for gathering user feedback, which will shape the final version of the portal expected to roll out in the coming months.
