The long-awaited Nemom railway project in Thiruvananthapuram is finally moving toward the finish line. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor confirmed that the project is now slated for completion by March 2027, ending years of uncertainty surrounding the development of this critical rail infrastructure. This update arrives following persistent advocacy from local leadership and a renewed focus on regional terminal capacity.
Key updates regarding the project:
- Target Completion Date: March 2027.
- Project Status: Back on track after facing potential closure threats.
- Strategic Importance: Modernizing the Thiruvananthapuram South region rail network.
- Related Infrastructure: Thiruvananthapuram station redevelopment is expected by June 2028.
A Long Pursuit for Better Connectivity
Shashi Tharoor, who has been actively pursuing the development of the Nemom facility since 2009, shared the news during a book launch event in Thiruvananthapuram. He specifically highlighted the proactive role of Southern Railway General Manager R.N. Singh in revitalizing the project. The terminal had previously faced significant hurdles, including a period where the Railway Board considered shutting it down entirely—a proposal that was strongly opposed by both Tharoor and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
Following these discussions, the state government moved to formalize the location’s identity, resulting in the renaming of Nemom station to Thiruvananthapuram South. This change is part of a broader effort to streamline railway operations in the capital city.
Future Infrastructure Outlook
This development is a major win for commuters in Kerala who have long awaited increased rail capacity to reduce congestion at the main Thiruvananthapuram Central station. While the Nemom terminal project is set to wrap up in early 2027, it serves as a precursor to the larger redevelopment and modernization of the main Thiruvananthapuram station, which is currently scheduled to conclude by June 2028. Together, these projects are expected to significantly enhance the passenger experience and improve train handling capacity across the region.
