Indian Railways has streamlined the travel experience by allowing passengers to book confirmed tickets for vacant seats even after the initial reservation charts have been prepared. This initiative is designed to maximize seat utilization across the entire rail network, including premium services like the Vande Bharat Express, while providing a vital solution for travelers requiring urgent, last-minute journeys. Passengers can secure these seats up to 15 to 30 minutes before the scheduled departure of their train.
Understanding Chart Preparation Timings
Typically, the first reservation chart is prepared four hours before a train’s departure. However, the schedule varies based on timing: for trains departing between 5:01 AM and 2:00 PM, the chart is generally prepared by 8:00 PM the previous night. For trains scheduled to leave after 2:00 PM and before 5:00 AM the following morning, the first chart is prepared 8 to 10 hours prior to departure. The final reservation chart is released approximately 30 minutes before the train pulls out of the station, which is when the current booking window remains active.
How to Book Last Minute Vacant Seats
Travelers can book these available seats via the official IRCTC website, the IRCTC Rail Connect mobile application, or by visiting Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters at railway stations. To check for availability, users should navigate to the ‘Charts/Vacancy’ tab on the IRCTC platform. Any seats marked as ‘Current Available’ are open for immediate booking, provided they remain vacant.
It is important to note that there are no additional charges for current booking, and ticket prices remain consistent with standard fares. This provision, which has been recently reiterated following updates to chart preparation timings in late 2025 and early 2026, ensures that no seat goes to waste and provides a seamless experience for last-minute commuters.
