Indian Railways allows confirmed ticket booking even after first chart preparation

Indian Railways has streamlined its ticketing process to assist passengers requiring urgent travel by allowing confirmed bookings even after the initial reservation chart is released. This initiative ensures that vacant seats, resulting from last-minute cancellations or passenger no-shows, are utilized efficiently rather than remaining empty during the journey. Passengers can now secure these spots up to 15 minutes before the scheduled departure of their train.

  • Last-minute booking: Confirmed tickets can be booked up to 15 minutes before train departure.
  • Availability check: Use the ‘Current Availability’ option on the IRCTC website, mobile app, or PRS counters.
  • Chart timing: The first chart is prepared 10 hours before departure, with the final chart finalized 30 minutes before the train leaves.
  • TTE protocols: TTEs must report boarded and non-boarded passengers within 15-20 minutes of station departure to facilitate seat allocation.

Understanding the Booking Process and Emergency Quotas

To access these last-minute seats, travelers should monitor the Current Availability feature on the official IRCTC platforms. If a passenger fails to board, the TTE is authorized to allocate the vacant seat according to official railway protocols. Regarding the Emergency Quota (EQ), requests must be submitted a day in advance. Specifically, for trains departing between 00:00 and 14:00, requests are due by 12:00 PM, while for afternoon and evening trains (14:01 to 23:59), the deadline is 4:00 PM. Please note that same-day requests are not entertained, and requests for Sundays or public holidays must be placed on the preceding working day.

Recent Policy Updates and Future Enhancements

Indian Railways is continuously updating its systems to ensure transparency and ease of travel. Key upcoming changes include mandatory Aadhaar verification for Tatkal tickets starting in July 2025 and priority for Aadhaar-authenticated users for General Reserved tickets from January 2026. Furthermore, the Advance Reservation Period (ARP) has been reduced from 120 days to 60 days. These measures, combined with the launch of the revamped IRCTC website in July 2026, are designed to create a more efficient and user-friendly experience for millions of daily rail commuters across the country.
