Indian Railways has officially announced that ticket reservations for travel on October 19 will open for passengers on August 20 at 8:00 AM. This update marks a significant shift in the booking calendar following the recent revision of the Advance Reservation Period (ARP). The key highlights of this update include:
- Booking window: The Advance Reservation Period has been reduced from 120 days to 60 days.
- Effective date: The new 60-day rule came into effect on August 15, 2026.
- Objective: The policy change is designed to curb ticket hoarding and improve availability for genuine passengers.
- Booking time: Reservations for the October 19 date will commence at 8:00 AM on August 20.
Upgraded Reservation Infrastructure
This scheduling change aligns with the phased rollout of a modernized Passenger Reservation System (PRS). The new infrastructure replaces a legacy system that had been in operation for nearly 40 years. This technological overhaul is set to drastically improve digital performance, with the booking capacity increasing from 32,000 to 150,000 tickets per minute. Additionally, the system’s inquiry capacity has been scaled up from 400,000 to over 4 million requests per minute, ensuring a smoother experience during peak hours. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has personally reviewed the progress of this transition to ensure passenger convenience.
New Operational Protocols
Beyond the change in the reservation period, Indian Railways has implemented several measures to streamline the ticketing process. To manage crowds at physical locations, a new token system for queue management was introduced at PRS counters on August 1, 2026. Furthermore, online safety and fairness have been prioritized; Aadhaar-linked OTP authentication is now mandatory for all Tatkal bookings. To prevent misuse, authorized travel agents are now restricted from booking tickets during the initial 30-minute window after reservations open for both AC and non-AC classes. These comprehensive updates reflect the ongoing efforts of Indian Railways to digitize operations and provide a more equitable ticketing environment for all travelers.
