In a move to support the religious sentiments of devotees travelling during the holy month of Sawan, Indian Railways has introduced a special catering initiative. Starting July 30, 2026, across the network—and from July 29 at Gaya Junction—passengers can order garlic-onion-free satvik meals and special fasting thalis. This service will remain active throughout the Shravani Mela period, which spans from July 18 to August 15, 2026.
Key highlights of the initiative include:
- Satvik food options: Meals prepared strictly without onion and garlic to honor religious observances.
- Special Vrat Thalis: Fasting-friendly meals featuring sabudana khichdi, rock salt (sendha namak) dishes, kuttu ki poori, curd, and fruits.
- Convenient Booking: Passengers can order these meals directly to their seats via the IRCTC e-catering website or mobile app.
- Widespread Availability: Provisions have been made across railway food plazas and train pantry cars nationwide.
Ensuring Quality and Compliance
Ajit Kumar Sinha, the IRCTC Chief Regional Manager, emphasized that the decision was taken to respect the faith of millions of pilgrims who abstain from specific ingredients during this auspicious time. To ensure this service is implemented effectively, IRCTC has issued strict instructions to all licensed food stall operators and pantry car managers. Any failure to comply with these guidelines will result in disciplinary action, ensuring that pilgrims receive food that aligns with their dietary requirements.
Enhanced Travel Support for Pilgrims
This catering initiative is part of a larger effort by the national transporter to facilitate smooth travel for the Shravani Mela. Zonal railways, including the Eastern and South Eastern Railways, have already announced significant operational support, including the introduction of 26 pairs of special trains and the provision of temporary stoppages at key pilgrim destinations. By combining these operational upgrades with the new satvik catering service, Indian Railways aims to provide a hassle-free and spiritually comfortable journey for all devotees heading to the Mela.
