Sikkim: The Only Indian State Without a Railway Station

Sikkim stands out as the only state in India that does not have a single railway station, even though Indian Railways has been serving passengers for centuries. Since the inception of railways in India in 1853, the network has expanded tremendously, connecting numerous states and cities. Despite being a popular tourist destination that attracts a large number of visitors each year, Sikkim remains devoid of railway infrastructure. The state joined India as the 22nd state on May 16, 1975, but has yet to see the establishment of any railway lines or stations.

Geographical Challenges and Environmental Concerns

The primary reasons for the absence of railway stations in Sikkim are its unique geography and rugged terrain. The state is characterized by steep slopes, deep valleys, and unpredictable weather, making it challenging to construct a stable railway network. Additionally, Sikkim’s lush green forests are home to diverse wildlife, which further complicates the situation. Experts believe that introducing railway lines could negatively impact the environment, potentially leading to disastrous consequences in the future.

Current Travel Options and Future Developments

Despite the lack of a railway network, Sikkim has a well-maintained road system that offers alternative travel options for residents and tourists. People typically reach Sikkim by arriving at the nearest railway stations in Siliguri or Jalpaiguri, located in neighboring West Bengal, and then travel by bus or taxi. However, the state is set to gain its first railway station, named Rangpo, in the coming years. This station will serve Rangpo city and three districts: Pakyong, Gangtok, and Mangan, featuring three platforms and four railway tracks.
