This article discusses the delays in train services due to fog and the absence of a safety system called Kavach.
Train services have been facing significant delays as the winter fog sets in. In Muzaffarpur, many trains are running late because the signals are not visible in thick fog. Train drivers have reported that they can’t see signals clearly, even from just 50 meters away.
One of the biggest problems happens in the morning when visibility is low. If the Kavach system were installed, drivers could see signals from a distance of one to two kilometers, making it safer and more efficient to operate trains. This system is being installed across all railway divisions in the East Central Railways.
On Thursday, for example, the Vande Bharat train from Jogbani to Danapur arrived two hours late in Muzaffarpur. Other trains, like the Bihar Sampark Kranti Express and the Vaishali Express, faced delays of over five hours. Passengers have had to wait for long hours at the station due to these delays.
Various trains have reported delays ranging from one and a half hours to over six hours. The senior operations manager from Samastipur Rail Division confirmed that the delays are primarily due to fog conditions, affecting the schedule significantly.
As a result of the ongoing delays, especially in this cold weather, passengers, including women and children, are facing considerable discomfort waiting at the stations. Immediate improvements in train timings are expected only once the fog clears and safety measures are enhanced.

- Train services are delayed due to thick winter fog.
- The Kavach safety system is not yet installed, affecting visibility.
- Delays range from two hours to over six hours for various trains.
- Passengers are experiencing long waits in uncomfortable conditions.
