The Public Works Department (PWD) has started the process of constructing a new underpass under the railway bypass in Yamuna Nagar. This project will be developed between Maharana Pratap Chowk (Old Kamani Chowk) and Vishwakarma Chowk to provide safer travel for thousands of local residents.
Why is the new underpass being built?
The area has been identified as a black spot for accidents since 2019, with more than 35 people losing their lives in road mishaps. The old underpass was closed 11 years ago due to waterlogging and heavy vehicle movement. Officials decided to build a new one about 300 meters away from the old site because reopening the previous underpass could damage the structure of the railway bypass.
Project cost and official updates
The new underpass will be constructed at an estimated cost of approximately 1.12 crore rupees. PWD XEN Puneet Mittal confirmed that the tender has been issued and work will start once the process is complete. Additionally, a beautification project for the bypass road is underway with a budget of 2.40 crore rupees, which includes new footpaths and fencing.
