The Chakradharpur Railway Division is implementing several safety measures to prevent elephants from coming into conflict with trains. The railway is installing an AI-based Intrusion Detection System (IDS) and creating physical barriers along the tracks. These steps aim to reduce elephant deaths and ensure smoother train operations in forest zones.

How does the AI Intrusion Detection System work?
The AI system uses Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) technology with pressure-wave sensors and optical fiber cables. It can detect the movement of elephants up to 200 meters before they reach the track. Once detected, the system sends an instant alert with the location to the railway control room, station masters, and loco pilots so they can slow down or stop the trains.
What are the other safety measures being taken?
Apart from AI, the railway is focusing on physical barriers and surveillance. Metal beams are being installed to fence the lines, and drones are being used to monitor the forests and tracks. The railway has also decided to build underpasses at 11 different locations to allow elephants to cross safely.
