Indian Railways has taken a significant step toward inclusive travel by launching its first AI-powered sign language system at Badshahnagar station in Lucknow. Rolled out on July 9, 2026, this technology is designed to empower deaf and mute passengers by providing real-time train updates through artificial intelligence, allowing them to navigate their journeys with complete independence.
Key highlights of the new system include:
- Real-time translation: Live English and Hindi audio announcements are converted into Indian Sign Language (ISL) animations.
- Visual communication: The system displays these translations as avatar animations on LED screens installed on Platform 1.
- Seamless integration: The technology is directly linked to the station’s existing public address system to capture updates on arrivals, departures, delays, and platform changes.
- Expertly developed: The project was created by the Lucknow Division’s Signal and Telecommunication Department in partnership with Techtron Infotech Pvt Ltd.
A Commitment to Inclusive Travel
This innovative project was spearheaded by Senior Divisional Signal and Telecommunication Engineer Vaibhav Shrivastava. To ensure the system meets the highest standards of accessibility, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Gaurav Agarwal confirmed that the facility underwent a rigorous two-month field trial. During this phase, the technology was vetted by certified sign language interpreters and representatives from a Noida-based organization for the deaf and hard of hearing to verify its accuracy.
Future Outlook for Railway Accessibility
While this initiative is currently live only at Badshahnagar, it marks a milestone in railway modernization. Railway officials estimate that this facility will benefit over one lakh passengers with disabilities who pass through the station annually. Although there is no official timeline yet for expanding this technology to other stations across the country, the successful implementation in Lucknow sets a promising precedent for future accessibility upgrades across the Indian Railways network. By leveraging AI, the national transporter continues to bridge the communication gap for passengers with special needs, ensuring that travel information is accessible to everyone regardless of their physical abilities.
