The historic Jalandhar Cantt railway station is set for a major transformation as it prepares for its official inauguration under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to dedicate the modernized facility to the nation on July 17, 2026. This significant milestone follows an intensive inspection by Union Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu, who reviewed the final preparations earlier this month to ensure the station meets the highest standards of passenger comfort.
- Inauguration Date: July 17, 2026.
- Project Cost: Approximately 125 crore rupees.
- Passenger Footfall: Serving around 7,500 passengers daily.
- Operational Capacity: Handles 66 pairs of trains.
- Key Amenities: 10 elevators, 8 escalators, and a modern air concourse.
Modernization and Infrastructure Upgrades
The 110-year-old station has received a massive makeover, blending heritage aesthetics with modern functionality. The redevelopment, costing 125 crore rupees, focuses on providing an “airport-like” experience for travelers. A standout feature is the 40-meter-wide and 200-meter-long steel-structured roof, which spans 8,720 square meters to offer a weather-protected environment for passengers. Furthermore, a new 36-meter-wide air concourse has been constructed to ensure seamless connectivity between both sides of Jalandhar city.
Enhanced Passenger Amenities
To improve movement and accessibility, the station has been equipped with two new foot over bridges (FOBs), measuring 6 meters and 9 meters in width respectively. For passengers with reduced mobility and heavy luggage, 10 elevators and 8 escalators have been installed. The station now boasts energy-efficient LED lighting, anti-skid flooring, and high-end AC waiting halls equipped with large screens for real-time information.
Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu described the project as a “historic gift” to the people of Punjab. Northern Railway General Manager Rajesh Kumar Pandey has been overseeing the final stages of the project, ensuring that the station is fully prepared for its grand opening. With a new 300-square-meter station building and an expansive 4,855-square-meter parking area, the redeveloped Jalandhar Cantt station is poised to become a premier transit hub, significantly improving last-mile connectivity and the overall travel experience for thousands of daily commuters.
