The long-awaited Bhandari Bagh Railway Overbridge project in Dehradun has finally hit a positive stride. As of July 11, 2026, construction authorities have officially requested a railway block to facilitate the critical launching of bridge girders, marking a major milestone for this infrastructure project.
- The project aims to connect Bhandari Bagh to Race Course Chowk.
- Railway engineers are currently evaluating the 76-meter iron bridge structure.
- The request for a block follows the resolution of a previous shortage of 60 LPG cylinders.
- District officials have appointed nodal officers to monitor the remaining construction phases.
Overcoming Past Hurdles
Progress on this bridge has been anything but smooth since its inception. Originally conceived in 2013 with the foundation stone laid in 2021, the project missed several completion deadlines, including March 2023 and March 2024. A notable recent setback occurred on May 11, 2026, when construction stalled due to a shortage of 60 LPG cylinders. These cylinders are essential for welding 700 tons of iron components required for the bridge’s assembly. With the supply issue now resolved, Leesha Engineers Ltd. is moving forward with the project.
Focus on Safety and Oversight
In light of the persistent delays, the District Magistrate intervened on September 26, 2025, to address public concerns regarding traffic congestion and safety hazards, such as dangerous gaps between roads and homes near the construction site. To ensure accountability, the SDM Sadar and a PWD Executive Engineer were appointed as nodal officers to oversee the work.
Currently, railway engineers are conducting a thorough technical evaluation of the 76-meter long iron bridge. This assessment is a mandatory requirement before the railway grants the necessary block permit. While the Bhandari Bagh side of the infrastructure has been visible for over a year, the Race Course side had previously been limited to pillar erection. With the upcoming girder launch, residents and commuters hope to finally see this vital link reach completion, putting an end to years of travel inconvenience.
