Indian Railways has launched a massive infrastructure overhaul to prepare for the 2027 Ardh Kumbh Mela in Haridwar, ensuring seamless travel for the millions expected to attend the sacred event. Starting on **January 14, 2027**, with the Makar Sankranti royal bath, the Mela is expected to draw between **12.5 million and 20 million pilgrims** through mid-April. To manage this historic influx, officials are coordinating closely with the Uttarakhand government to enhance station capacities and streamline crowd movement.
Key highlights of the railway preparations include:
- Integration of **ten railway stations** in the Haridwar-Rishikesh region to distribute passenger load.
- Construction of **five color-coded holding areas** capable of accommodating **19,000 pilgrims** simultaneously.
- Deployment of **100 pairs of special trains** and 15 additional services during peak periods.
- Comprehensive development of Harrawala station under the **Amrit Bharat Station Scheme** by March 2026.
- Strict completion target of **October 2026** for all infrastructure and security upgrades.
Station Upgrades and Crowd Management
To reduce congestion at the main Haridwar hub, authorities are upgrading key stations including **Yog Nagri, Raiwala, Motichur, Jwalapur, Pathri, Laksar, and Roorkee**. The Haridwar Railway Station itself will feature a permanent holding area designed to accommodate **10,000 passengers**, equipped with essential amenities like clean drinking water, toilets, and dedicated ticketing counters. Stations like Motichur and Jwalapur are undergoing significant renovations, including platform strengthening, better seating, and improved entry/exit management to ensure the safety and comfort of devotees.
Enhanced Security and Operational Readiness
Safety remains a top priority, with the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) collaborating to deploy additional personnel and expanded CCTV surveillance across the network. The railway is also proposing temporary halts for regular trains at local stations to improve accessibility for pilgrims. Senior officials, including **Railway Board Chairman Satish Kumar**, have been conducting regular inspections to monitor progress. As part of these efforts, land clearance operations were successfully carried out on June 23, 2026, near the Tibri railway underbridge. With work progressing rapidly, Indian Railways aims to have a robust, passenger-friendly system fully operational months before the first royal bath.
