The Gorakhpur Mechanical Workshop has achieved a historic milestone by completing the first-ever overhaul of a Vande Bharat rake. This achievement underscores the growing technical capabilities of regional workshops in maintaining India’s premium semi-high-speed train fleet. The refurbished rake is now prepared for deployment on the Gorakhpur-Ayodhya-Lucknow-Prayagraj Vande Bharat route, with its service scheduled to commence on Sunday, July 13, 2026.
Key highlights of this development include:
- The comprehensive repair, cleaning, and washing were successfully conducted at the New Coaching Depot in Gorakhpur on July 11, 2026.
- The rake underwent rigorous trial runs on the Gorakhpur-Barhni route on July 7 and 8, 2026, where it successfully clocked speeds between 110 to 120 kmph.
- Railway authorities have formally commended the engineering team for their commitment in completing the task despite limited resources.
- The workshop is already preparing for its next assignment, with an 8-coach Vande Bharat rake expected to arrive for maintenance soon.
Infrastructure Challenges and Future Outlook
While the Gorakhpur workshop has proven its operational efficiency, the local administration faces hurdles regarding the construction of a dedicated Vande Bharat depot due to land unavailability. This bottleneck presents ongoing challenges for the routine maintenance of critical services, including the Gorakhpur-Prayagraj and Gorakhpur-Patliputra trains.
On a national level, Indian Railways is prioritizing infrastructure expansion to support the growing Vande Bharat fleet. The national transporter has earmarked an investment of over ₹14,000 crore to modernize existing depots and develop new, state-of-the-art maintenance facilities. A significant part of this initiative includes the development of India’s first Vande Bharat sleeper coach maintenance facility at Bhagat Ki Kothi Railway Station in Jodhpur, which is expected by June 2026 at an estimated cost of ₹3600 million. Other stations identified for major maintenance upgrades include Prayagraj, Kanpur, Agra Fort, Gwalior, Virangna Lakshmibai junction, and Tiruchi, ensuring that the Vande Bharat network remains safe and reliable for passengers across the country.
