Indian Railways has reported an overall train punctuality rate of 76.32% for the quarter spanning April to June 2026. This performance metric covers all major categories, including the premium Vande Bharat, Rajdhani, and Shatabdi Express services, alongside the standard Mail and Express network. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed these figures in Parliament on July 23, 2026, noting that the system is actively working toward even higher reliability.
- Overall Punctuality: 76.32% achieved during the April–June 2026 quarter.
- Mail/Express Improvement: Recorded 75.76% punctuality, up from 75.05% in the previous quarter.
- Operational Excellence: 24 railway divisions achieved over 90% punctuality.
- Strategic Goal: Benchmarking against Japanese rail standards for long-term operations.
- Technology Integration: Use of AI and IT-based systems to optimize timetables.
Aiming for Global Benchmarks
While current punctuality metrics for Indian Railways are already comparable to major European rail networks in France, Germany, and Italy, the government has set its sights on the gold standard of Japanese rail operations. To bridge this gap, the national transporter has initiated a 26-week forward maintenance planning strategy. This proactive approach ensures that rolling stock and track infrastructure receive systematic upkeep, preventing unexpected delays and ensuring smoother transit for millions of passengers.
Technology and Divisional Success
To further bolster performance, Indian Railways is increasingly relying on advanced technical tools and AI-based analysis to identify and rectify structural bottlenecks in current train timetables. These data-driven interventions are already yielding visible results across the country.
The efficiency drive is particularly strong at the divisional level. Impressively, 43 divisions have exceeded the 80% punctuality mark, with 24 of those hitting over 90%. Notable performers in this category include the Madurai, Jodhpur, Hooghly, Bhavnagar, Kota, Izzatnagar, Ratlam, and Ajmer divisions. As these systems scale, passengers can expect a more predictable and reliable travel experience across the network in the coming months.
