In a major push to enhance rail infrastructure in Southern India, the Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has greenlit a significant project to construct third and fourth railway lines on the Ballari-Guntakal section. This strategic initiative, aimed at bolstering connectivity between Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, was officially announced by Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday, July 24, 2026.
Key highlights of the project include:
- Project Cost: ₹1,264 crore
- Total Expansion: Addition of 46 kilometers to the existing network
- Completion Timeline: Slated for completion by fiscal year 2028-29
- Infrastructure: Construction of a 762-meter mega bridge over the Vedavathi River, plus 59 additional bridges
- Economic Impact: Capacity increase of 16.22 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) in freight traffic
Strengthening Economic Corridors
Falling under the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan, this project is designed to streamline the movement of essential commodities including iron ore, coal, limestone, dolomite, fertilizers, and food grains. By adding the third and fourth lines, Indian Railways aims to decongest this vital stretch, ensuring faster transit times and improved operational efficiency for both freight and passenger services.
Environmental and Social Benefits
Beyond the logistical advantages, the project carries significant environmental benefits. It is projected to reduce oil imports by 1.32 crore liters annually and cut CO2 emissions by 6.67 crore kg, a reduction equivalent to planting 0.27 crore trees. From a social perspective, the rail expansion will generate approximately 31 lakh human-days of employment and provide enhanced connectivity to 99 villages, directly benefiting nearly seven lakh residents.
Boosting Tourism and Regional Growth
The rail development is expected to improve access to iconic landmarks such as the Ballari Fort and the Sri Kumara Swamy Temple. This initiative acts as a cornerstone for a broader economic corridor, with the government already strategizing further railway line projects to ensure sustained regional growth and improved passenger experience across the Karnataka-Andhra border.
