Pune Railway Station is set for a massive transformation as work begins on a significant expansion project aimed at doubling the station’s capacity. The initiative, which seeks to modernize one of the most crucial rail hubs in the country, focuses on infrastructure upgrades, yard remodelling, and the addition of six new platforms to improve passenger flow and reduce congestion.
- Foundation work for platforms 11 and 12 began in April 2026.
- The total number of platforms at Pune station will increase from six to twelve.
- The project is estimated to cost ₹473 crore.
- Full operationalization of the new platforms is expected within a three-year timeline.
- Existing platforms 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 are being extended to handle 24 and 26-coach trains.
Strategic Expansion and Infrastructure Upgrades
On June 17, 2026, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw officially laid the foundation stone for the comprehensive yard remodelling and the construction of these six new platforms. According to Central Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Dr. Swapnil Nila, the ₹473 crore project is a vital step toward modernizing the Pune division. While the physical construction of platforms 7 through 12 is targeted for completion by March 2027, the rail authorities noted that full utility depends on the parallel development of supporting infrastructure, including new foot overbridges and expanded circulating areas.
Future Outlook for Passengers
The primary goal of this expansion is to resolve the persistent issues of platform crowding and train delays that have long affected commuters. By expanding the station’s capacity, Indian Railways anticipates the introduction of around 20 additional train services in the near term, with a long-term projection of accommodating up to 60 extra trains once all 12 platforms are fully operational.
Beyond just adding more tracks, the project includes a comprehensive overhaul of the station’s backbone. This features a new Electronic Interlocking system, improved signalling, and modernized passenger amenities. Travelers can look forward to a more seamless experience through new entry points, skywalks, lifts, and escalators. This holistic approach ensures that as Pune continues to grow as a major economic center, its railway infrastructure remains capable of meeting the rising demand for travel.
