Southern Railway has officially introduced three innovative digital applications aimed at modernizing railway operations, enhancing safety, and improving overall efficiency. Unveiled by General Manager R N Singh on July 25, 2026, at the Chennai headquarters, these internally developed tools are designed to streamline field tasks, reduce the scope for human error, and digitize critical safety protocols. The initiative marks a significant step toward a paperless and data-driven working environment for railway staff.
- e-TSR (Electronic Train Signal Register) replaces manual paper registers to record train movements automatically.
- RBMS (Railway Block Management System) digitizes the entire lifecycle of engineering and maintenance blocks.
- DOST (Delivering Occupational Safety on Track) provides real-time GPS-based alerts to protect track-side workers.
Digitizing Operational Workflows
The e-TSR application is set to replace traditional, time-consuming paper-based signal registers. By automatically capturing train movement data directly from signaling systems, it eliminates manual entry errors and significantly lowers paper consumption. This transition ensures that all train operations are logged with higher accuracy and are easily accessible for future reference.
Complementing this is the RBMS, a comprehensive platform that manages ‘blocks’—the essential time slots required for engineering, power, signal, and telecom maintenance. The system handles everything from the initial request to the final clearance and completion. With OTP authentication, geo-features, and integrated dashboards, the RBMS allows for faster, more informed decision-making by controllers and station managers.
Prioritizing Staff Safety with Technology
Perhaps the most critical addition is the DOST (Delivering Occupational Safety on Track) app, which is specifically engineered to safeguard railway personnel working on the tracks. By cross-referencing real-time train movement data with the GPS locations of field staff, the app provides timely warnings when a train approaches.
To ensure effectiveness in high-noise environments, the app includes multi-sensory alerts, including sound, light, vibrations, and multilingual voice notifications. Furthermore, it features an emergency SOS function, ensuring that workers are protected even in challenging conditions. These digital initiatives are expected to drastically reduce the manual workload for engineering and maintenance teams while fostering a safer working culture across the Southern Railway network.
