Indian Railways is taking a significant step toward improving passenger hygiene by integrating advanced AI-powered surveillance in its laundry facilities. During a parliamentary session on July 24, 2026, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that a pilot project is currently underway to use AI-camera technology to detect stains on linens, ensuring that every bedsheet and pillow cover meets high cleanliness standards before reaching travelers.
Key updates regarding the new linen hygiene initiative include:
• AI-powered stain detection is currently active in Pune, Jaipur, and Jodhpur divisions.
• CCTV monitoring has been implemented across laundry units to ensure strict adherence to cleaning protocols.
• Whito-Meters remain in use to scientifically measure the whiteness and quality of washed linen.
• Blanket covers are now provided for every use, with pilot testing expanded to North Western Railway and the Kamakhya-Howrah Vande Bharat Sleeper train.
Leveraging Technology for Passenger Comfort
The new AI system utilizes sophisticated computer vision and machine learning algorithms to scan washed items for imperfections. By automating the inspection process, the Railways aims to remove the margin of human error, ensuring that passengers receive fresh, hygienic bedrolls. This project, shared by the Minister in response to a query from MP Chandrakant Handore, supplements the existing mechanized laundry processes already in place across the network.
Linen Standards and Replacement Norms
Indian Railways maintains strict guidelines for the maintenance and lifespan of its linen. A standard AC class bedroll consists of two bedsheets, one pillow cover, and a hand towel. To ensure quality, the department follows a defined ‘codal life’ for these items, which is nine months for pillow covers and face towels, while bedsheets are replaced every 12 to 24 months based on their material. Items that fail to meet these standards or show signs of wear are discarded and replaced according to official railway norms. The positive reception of the blanket cover initiative, particularly on the new Vande Bharat Sleeper service, highlights the growing commitment of Indian Railways to enhancing the overall passenger experience.
