Indian Railways increases general and sleeper coach capacity for affordable travel

In a major relief for millions of daily commuters and long-distance travelers, Indian Railways has launched a comprehensive strategy to significantly boost seat availability in general and sleeper class coaches. As of July 26, 2026, the national transporter is prioritizing the needs of low and middle-income passengers by expanding its non-AC fleet and optimizing rake compositions across the country.

  • 17,000 new non-AC coaches are being prepared to enhance affordable travel capacity.
  • Amrit Bharat trains are being expanded with a composition of 11 general and 8 sleeper coaches.
  • A new policy mandates 12 general/non-AC sleeper coaches for Mail/Express trains with 22-coach rakes.
  • Indian Railways has successfully installed the ‘Kavach’ safety system across 2,490 route kilometers.

Expanding the Non-AC Fleet

Recognizing the massive demand for affordable rail travel, Indian Railways has been consistently adding to its non-AC capacity. In the 2024-25 fiscal year, the network added 1,250 general coaches, followed by another 870 coaches in 2025-26. By June 30, 2026, an additional 190 coaches were integrated into the system. Currently, approximately 70% of the nearly 89,000 coaches operating across the Indian Railways network are non-AC, underscoring the commitment to the common passenger.

Modernization and Safety Upgrades

Alongside capacity expansion, the quality of travel is also seeing a shift toward modernization. The production of LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) coaches has reached 49,366 units between 2014 and 2026, ensuring safer and more comfortable journeys. Furthermore, the indigenous ‘Kavach’ anti-collision system is now active on critical corridors, including the high-traffic Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah routes.

Ensuring Connectivity for All

Beyond long-distance Mail and Express services, the Railways continues to strengthen its network of unreserved passenger, MEMU, and EMU services. These suburban and regional trains remain the backbone of daily transit for the common man. With the ongoing rollout of Amrit Bharat trains—which are fully non-AC and include dedicated pantry and Divyangjan-friendly luggage coaches—Indian Railways is mapping out a future where affordable travel remains convenient, safe, and accessible to everyone.
