Indian Railways has launched a comprehensive operational plan at Ujjain Railway Station to accommodate the massive surge of pilgrims during the holy month of Shravan. With an expected daily footfall of over 95,000 passengers and a total influx of up to 150,000 devotees, the Ratlam Division has implemented strict crowd management and security protocols effective from July 30, 2026, to September 7, 2026. These measures aim to ensure a seamless experience for visitors traveling to the Mahakaleshwar Temple.
Key highlights of the railway arrangements include:
* Introduction of a one-way traffic system: Passengers enter via Platform 1 and exit via Platform 8.
* Deployment of additional ticketing staff and infrastructure, including four new UTS and one PRS counter.
* Creation of large temporary waterproof holding areas to manage crowd density.
* Operation of special Mela trains and increased frequency of existing services to major cities.
* Enhanced security through drone surveillance and increased RPF and GRP personnel.
New Traffic Flow and Crowd Management
To prevent congestion, authorities have implemented a one-way entry and exit system at Ujjain station. The goods shed entry has been completely closed to streamline passenger movement. Outside the station, a temporary waterproof holding area for 1,200 passengers has been set up, supported by a 650-square-meter facility near Platform 1. Furthermore, the main entrance has been declared a no-vehicle zone across three lanes to ensure pedestrian safety and smooth traffic flow.
Enhanced Connectivity and Security
Recognizing the high demand, Railways has introduced three pairs of unreserved Mela Special trains running between Ujjain, Bhopal, and Sant Hirdaram Nagar from July 28 to September 8, 2026. Additionally, the frequency of five key special trains connecting Indore to major hubs like Mumbai Central, Nizamuddin, Patna, and Khadki has been increased. To maintain order, 50 additional RPF and 30 GRP personnel have been deployed, supported by constant drone surveillance. An emergency rake remains stationed at Ujjain to handle any unforeseen exigencies.
Railway officials have stated that these extensive arrangements serve as a trial model to refine crowd control strategies for future large-scale events, most notably the Simhastha 2028. By coordinating closely with state authorities, the Ratlam Division is prioritizing passenger safety and convenience during this peak pilgrimage season.
