Indian Railways has officially commenced the technical testing of its first Vande Bharat Freight Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) prototype, marking a significant milestone in modernizing the nation’s logistics network. The trials, which began on July 29, 2026, took place on the Kota-Nagda-Sawai Madhopur high-speed rail section. During these initial assessments, the prototype successfully touched a **maximum speed of 145 km/h**.

Key highlights of the new Vande Bharat Freight EMU include:

  • Manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai.
  • The 16-coach rake features 12 parcel coaches, 2 non-driving trailer coaches, and 2 refrigerated vans.
  • Equipped with an advanced ‘Kavach’ anti-collision system.
  • Boasts a total payload capacity exceeding 397 tons with an axle load capacity of over 20 tons.
  • Features modern amenities like pneumatic retractable roller flooring and forced ventilation.

Testing and Technical Objectives

The extensive testing program is being overseen by the Research Designs & Standards Organisation (RDSO) and is scheduled to run for approximately one month. The Kota Division was strategically chosen for these trials due to its high-quality track infrastructure and modern signaling systems, which are essential for safe high-speed operations. The trials involve daily round trips, starting with speed increments of 120 km/h and 135 km/h before pushing the train to its peak performance capabilities.

Engineers are conducting a comprehensive suite of tests to ensure the train meets global safety and operational standards. These include **oscillation trials, Emergency Braking Distance (EBD) assessments, coupler force evaluations, and monitoring of traction and regenerative energy systems**. By verifying these parameters, Indian Railways aims to ensure the train can handle the rigors of time-bound freight transportation and express parcel services.

Revolutionizing Logistics

This freight EMU is designed to transform the logistics sector by providing a faster, more reliable alternative for e-commerce deliveries and time-sensitive cargo. With the inclusion of **refrigerated parcel facilities**, the train will play a crucial role in cold chain logistics, ensuring the safe transport of temperature-sensitive goods across the country. By leveraging Vande Bharat technology, Indian Railways is positioning itself to capture a larger share of the express logistics market, offering efficiency levels that were previously unmatched in the rail freight segment. Once the month-long validation process concludes, the train is expected to be a game-changer for the nation’s supply chain network.
