Lucknow North MLA Dr. Neeraj Bora has formally submitted a proposal to the Union Railway Ministry and the Uttar Pradesh state government to rename Mohibullapur Railway Station as Jankipuram Railway Station. This initiative, brought to public attention on July 30, 2026, aims to better reflect the local geography and meet the long-standing demands of area residents.
Key highlights of the proposal and station development include:
- Formal renaming request: Replacing the name Mohibullapur with Jankipuram to align with the surrounding residential demographics.
- Political support: The initiative is backed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and has the cooperation of Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
- Modernization drive: The station is currently undergoing a major upgrade featuring high-speed Wi-Fi, digital displays, and improved passenger amenities.
- Strategic infrastructure: A new entry gate is planned near Engineering College Chauraha Road to improve accessibility.
- Circular rail project: The station will serve as a key node in the proposed circular rail network, benefiting passengers from Sitapur and Lakhimpur.
Rationale Behind the Renaming
Dr. Neeraj Bora stated that the current name, Mohibullapur, has become geographically irrelevant as there is no major settlement by that name in the immediate vicinity. In contrast, Jankipuram is a sprawling residential hub that sits directly adjacent to the station. By aligning the station’s name with the local area, the MLA intends to honor the aspirations and sentiments of the local population.
Station Redevelopment and Future Connectivity
Beyond the name change, the station is receiving a significant facelift. Passengers can look forward to enhanced platform shelters, clean drinking water, modern restrooms, and upgraded seating arrangements. These improvements are part of a broader strategy to boost the station’s utility.
Furthermore, the station is a vital component of the proposed circular rail project. Once the redevelopment work is completed, authorities plan to increase the number of stoppages for major mail and express trains at this location. This move is specifically designed to reduce the heavy passenger load and congestion currently experienced at the major hubs of Charbagh and Lucknow Junction.
While the proposal for the name change is currently under review, the final decision rests with the Central Home Ministry. This process requires a formal recommendation from the state government along with the necessary No-Objection Certificates (NOCs) from the relevant departments.
