Originally sanctioned in 2018 with an estimated cost of ₹4,821 crore, the project faced significant delays due to administrative hurdles and political transitions. Following productive discussions between Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, alongside Rajnandgaon MP Santosh Pandey and Union Minister of State Tokhan Sahu, the project has now been fast-tracked. The investment has been revised to ₹6,947 crore to reflect current requirements and project scope.

This new rail corridor is designed to bring long-awaited rail connectivity to underserved regions such as Rajnandgaon, Khairagarh, Chhuikhadan, Kawardha, and Pandariya.
