Indian Railways is set to transform the passenger experience by launching an online luggage booking facility starting July 31, 2026. This digital initiative, aimed at reducing congestion at station parcel offices, allows passengers with confirmed tickets to book their excess baggage beforehand through the official IRCTC portal or the railway parcel website (parcel.indianrail.gov.in). The system, developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), follows a directive issued by the Railway Board on July 20, 2026.
- Eligibility: Only passengers with confirmed tickets are eligible; waitlisted and RAC passengers cannot use this service.
- Platform: Bookings can be made via the IRCTC portal or parcel.indianrail.gov.in.
- Penalty: Carrying unbooked excess luggage can result in fines up to six times the normal rate.

Understanding Luggage Allowances and Rules
While this digital shift brings convenience, passengers must continue to adhere to the existing luggage allowance guidelines outlined in Freight Marketing Circular No. 38, 2006. The free luggage allowance is categorized by coach class: 70 kg for First AC, 50 kg for First Class and Second AC, 40 kg for Third AC, AC Chair Car, and Sleeper Class, and 35 kg for Second Class. Any weight beyond these limits will be charged at 1.5 times the applicable luggage rate.
It is crucial for travelers to note that for Third AC, AC 3 Economy, and AC Chair Car, the free allowance and the maximum permissible weight are both capped at 40 kg. Consequently, additional luggage booking is not permitted in these specific classes. By moving the booking process online, Indian Railways aims to save valuable time for travelers and ensure a smoother boarding process by eliminating the need for last-minute paperwork at busy railway stations.
