The Ministry of Railways has officially sanctioned the construction of a two-lane railway overbridge (ROB) at Galgalia to resolve long-standing traffic congestion near the India-Nepal border. This “special railway project,” approved on July 30, 2026, is set to be executed under the PM Gati Shakti scheme, ensuring faster construction timelines and seamless implementation.

Strategic Importance and Infrastructure Boost
This new overbridge is a crucial step in enhancing safety and accessibility for commuters and trade between India and Nepal. By eliminating the bottleneck at the existing level crossing, the project will significantly improve transportation efficiency for local residents and cross-border travelers alike. The Kishanganj District Land Acquisition Officer has been designated as the competent authority to manage land acquisition, ensuring that the project progresses without administrative delays.
Transforming Galgalia into a Logistics Hub
Beyond the overbridge, the railway is investing an additional ₹21 crore into the comprehensive modernization of the Galgalia railway station. This investment covers the construction of a new station building, platform expansion, improved approach roads, and enhanced drinking water facilities. Furthermore, the development of a modern goods shed and freight yard is expected to transform Galgalia into a major logistics hub for the Northeast Frontier Railway.
Once completed, this site is poised to become the largest freight operations center between India and Nepal. Local communities have expressed strong support for the initiative, noting that the combined infrastructure upgrades will likely stimulate trade, boost regional tourism, and create significant economic opportunities in the border area. The project remains a top priority for the NFR to ensure that infrastructure keeps pace with the growing demand for connectivity in the region.
