The dream of overnight premium rail travel between India’s technology hub and its financial capital is nearing reality. Two 16-coach Vande Bharat Sleeper trainsets, manufactured by BEML, have arrived in Bengaluru as of mid-August 2026, marking a major milestone for the upcoming Bengaluru-Mumbai corridor. These state-of-the-art trains are currently undergoing rigorous pre-commissioning checks and safety inspections.

Progress and Operational Trials
Following approval from the Central government in April 2026, the project has moved rapidly under the guidance of Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. According to railway officials, the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) will spearhead the speed trials over the next two weeks. These trials are critical to ensuring the trainsets can safely operate at 130 kmph across the fully electrified and double-tracked route. Commercial operations will only commence once all safety and operational clearances are finalized.
Route and Passenger Experience
The service is designed to significantly improve connectivity, passing through key regions including Raichur, Yadgir, Kalaburagi, Solapur, and Pune. By replacing traditional long-distance travel times of 22-24 hours with an estimated 16-hour journey, this Vande Bharat service will offer a massive boost to passenger convenience. The Pune-Bengaluru leg is specifically projected to take just 13 hours.
Coach Configuration and Fares
The 16-coach configuration includes 11 AC three-tier coaches, four AC two-tier coaches, and one First AC coach. While Indian Railways is yet to announce the official train number and schedule, the estimated fare for AC 3-tier is expected to be around Rs 3,000, inclusive of onboard meals. Discussions are currently underway to finalize whether the train will depart from KSR Bengaluru or Sir M Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVT). Railway authorities, including the Bengaluru Divisional Railway Manager, continue to monitor the progress to ensure the service meets the high standards expected by passengers.
