Indian Railways is taking a significant step toward a greener future by expanding its hydrogen-powered train network. Following the successful pilot of the country’s first indigenous hydrogen train, the national transporter aims to deploy 35 hydrogen trains across various heritage corridors, including the scenic Kalka-Shimla, Ooty, and Darjeeling routes. This initiative is particularly focused on hilly terrains where traditional electrification poses significant engineering challenges.
Key highlights of the hydrogen train project:
• 35 hydrogen trains planned for deployment across heritage routes.
• The first indigenous train has successfully covered over 2,500 kilometers on the Jind-Sonipat route since July 17, 2026.
• Over 3,200 liters of diesel consumption saved as of July 28, 2026.
• The trainset is built under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative at a cost of Rs 141 crore.
• Infrastructure includes a 3,000 kg capacity hydrogen storage facility in Jind.
Engineering and Sustainability Milestones
The hydrogen trainset is a marvel of modern engineering, featuring a 1,200 kW hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system with a total power output of 2,400 kW. According to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the engine delivers the highest horsepower output globally in its class, reaching 1,200 horsepower. To ensure safety and operational efficiency, the dedicated hydrogen storage facility in Jind has been fully authorized by the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO).
Driving Toward Net-Zero Emissions
This expansion is a cornerstone of India’s commitment to becoming a net-zero carbon emitter by 2030. By replacing conventional diesel engines with zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell technology, Indian Railways is providing a sustainable mobility solution for non-electrified routes. The ministry is currently prioritizing the increased supply of green hydrogen and working actively to reduce production costs to make this technology viable for long-term integration into the national network. As these trains begin to replace diesel power on iconic heritage lines, passengers can look forward to a cleaner, quieter, and more environmentally friendly travel experience across India’s most beautiful railway stretches.
