Passengers at Adarsh Gonda Junction can now stay informed about their surrounding environment thanks to a new initiative by the Indian Railways. A state-of-the-art environmental monitoring system has been installed at the entrance of platform number one, featuring a 55-inch digital screen that provides continuous, real-time updates on air quality data. This move is designed to offer full transparency to commuters regarding the atmospheric conditions at the station.
Commitment to Environmental Standards
This installation is part of a larger, nationwide effort by the Indian Railways to monitor air quality and noise pollution levels, ensuring strict compliance with directives issued by the National Green Tribunal. Gonda Junction has a proven track record of environmental stewardship; the station earned a prestigious ISO certification in July 2021 for its dedication to meeting rigorous environmental protection standards under the Air and Water Act. This milestone was previously highlighted by the then-Divisional Railway Manager, Dr. Monika Agnihotri.
Focus on Sustainability and Health
While the station continues to maintain robust environmental management systems, regional air quality remains a critical focus for the administration. Recent reports for Gonda have indicated moderate to poor air quality levels, primarily driven by pollutants such as PM2.5 and PM10. To combat these challenges, the railway administration has appointed dedicated nodal officers responsible for overseeing environmental norms.
These officials are tasked with upholding the ‘Polluter Pays’ principle across the rail network, ensuring that environmental accountability remains a top priority. By providing passengers with live data, the railway hopes to raise awareness while continuing its journey toward a greener and more sustainable rail infrastructure. For daily commuters, this digital display serves as a helpful tool to gauge local conditions while navigating the station premises.
