Indian Railways is planning a major infrastructure upgrade on the Jabalpur-Kota rail section to improve train punctuality. The West Central Railway (WCR) has proposed the construction of bypass lines covering approximately 166 kilometers. This project aims to separate freight traffic from passenger trains to reduce delays at major junctions.

Which locations will get the new bypass lines

The Railway Board has approved 83 lakh rupees for the preliminary survey of these bypass tracks. The project will cover eight key locations to ensure that goods trains do not block the main lines. These locations include:

  • Bina and Jabalpur
  • Kota and Guna
  • Ruthiyai and Sawai Madhopur
  • Kachhpura and Ramganj Mandi

How will this benefit passenger train travelers

Currently, many passenger trains are held at outer signals because freight trains occupy the main tracks. With separate bypass lines, goods trains will move around the stations without entering the main platforms. This will help passenger trains stay on time and reduce the heavy traffic load at Bina Junction.

Other major rail projects in the region

Along with the bypass, the Union Cabinet has approved other large-scale projects to boost connectivity in the North-South corridor. The following table shows the key approved works:

Project Section Distance Estimated Cost
Gondia-Jabalpur Doubling 231 km ₹5,236 crore
Itarsi-Bhopal-Bina (4th Line) 237 km ₹4,329 crore

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the main purpose of the 166 km bypass project?

The project aims to provide separate tracks for freight trains at 8 major junctions, preventing passenger trains from waiting at outer signals and improving punctuality.

How much fund has been sanctioned for the initial survey?

The Railway Board has approved 83 lakh rupees for the preliminary survey work of the proposed bypass lines.
