Indian Railways has taken a significant step toward its sustainability goals with the North Central Railway (NCR) successfully piloting its first solar-assisted passenger coach. Tested in Prayagraj between July 20 and July 21, 2026, this innovation utilizes advanced technology to power onboard amenities and reduce the carbon footprint of train operations.

Advancing Towards Sustainable Rail Travel
According to Shivam Sharma, Chief PRO of NCR, this project is a strategic move to modernize rail operations. Under the guidance of General Manager Naresh Pal Singh, the railway is shifting toward green technologies to ensure substantial energy savings and a significant reduction in carbon emissions. By generating electricity directly from sunlight, the system not only improves energy efficiency but also extends the life of onboard batteries and lowers routine maintenance requirements compared to traditional power systems.
Expanding the Green Footprint
This pilot is part of a larger, nationwide push to reach Net-Zero Carbon Emissions by 2030. The momentum is visible across multiple zones. On July 21, 2026, the Ferozepur Railway Division announced plans to add 1.15 MW of rooftop solar capacity in the 2026–27 fiscal year, building on their existing 1.70 MW infrastructure across 22 stations. Furthermore, on July 20, 2026, Indian Railways issued an e-tender for a 1000 kWp (1 MW) grid-connected solar plant at the BLW Workshop, valued at approximately ₹4.02 crore. These concerted efforts highlight the commitment of Indian Railways to integrate renewable energy into its vast transportation network, promising a cleaner and more efficient future for millions of passengers.
