Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is setting up Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) in the hilly areas of Assam, Mizoram, and Manipur. This project aims to prevent rail accidents caused by heavy rain and landslides during the monsoon season. The installation work is expected to be completed by the end of May 2026.
Where are these weather stations being installed?
The railway is focusing on areas that are very sensitive to floods and landslides. Three stations are already active, and six more are under installation. Key locations include the Lumding-Badarpur section in Assam, the Katakhal-Sairang route connecting Mizoram, and the Jiribam-Khongsang section in Manipur.
What can these weather stations monitor?
These stations use advanced sensors to provide real-time data to railway officials. This helps them make quick decisions to keep trains running safely. The technical capabilities of these stations are listed below:
| Parameter | Monitoring Capacity |
|---|---|
| Rainfall Intensity | Up to 900 mm per hour |
| Temperature | -40°C to +75°C |
| Wind Speed | Up to 80 meters per second |
| Humidity | 0 to 100 percent |
| Atmospheric Pressure | Up to 1200 hPa |
Who is managing this project?
NFR is implementing this project in close coordination with the India Meteorological Department (IMD). CPRO Kapinjal Kishore Sharma stated that this is a major step to ensure safe and smooth train operations in difficult geographical terrains during the monsoon.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Automatic Weather Stations
