Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the redeveloped Muri and Piska railway stations in Jharkhand on July 17, 2026, marking a significant step in the nationwide Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS). These stations are among 75 railway hubs across 20 states that have undergone extensive modernization to improve passenger convenience and infrastructure standards. The redevelopment project, which began in 2023, reflects the Ministry of Railways’ commitment to creating world-class transit points that blend local heritage with modern technology.
Key features of the station upgrades include:
- Investment of ₹10 crore per station for comprehensive redevelopment.
- Introduction of Divyangjan-friendly infrastructure including ramps, tactile pathways, and accessible toilets.
- Enhanced passenger amenities like new waiting rooms, executive lounges, and modern booking counters.
- Improved station aesthetics with facades inspired by local art and culture.
- Installation of IP-based CCTV cameras and digital train/coach indicator boards for better safety and information.
Modern Amenities and Passenger Experience
Both stations have been designed to cater to the evolving needs of modern commuters. Piska station now features a new waiting room, while Muri has been upgraded with an executive lounge alongside separate first- and second-class waiting areas. The circulating and parking areas have been redesigned to manage traffic flow more efficiently, while new foot overbridges and upgraded platforms ensure safer movement for passengers. These enhancements, coupled with better lighting and drinking water facilities, aim to transform the daily commute for thousands of passengers in the region.
Focus on Regional Growth
Launched in December 2022, the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme follows the vision of Virasat Bhi, Vikas Bhi, which balances the preservation of local heritage with rapid infrastructure development. According to Ranchi Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Karuna Nidhi Singh, these upgrades are expected to boost regional trade, tourism, and economic activity. The modernization of Muri and Piska is part of a larger ₹200 crore infrastructure investment covering 15 stations within the Ranchi Railway Division under the South Eastern Railway. This long-term master planning approach ensures that railway stations serve as efficient, clean, and passenger-centric hubs for long-term growth.
