The North Central Railway has achieved a major infrastructure milestone by commissioning an advanced automatic signaling system on the 10.34-kilometer Hodal-Sholaka section within the Agra Division. This upgrade, which was successfully completed on July 18, 2026, covers the third and fourth railway lines and is set to transform operational efficiency in one of the busiest corridors of the network.
- The project completes the 61-kilometer automatic signaling rollout across the entire Bhuteshwar-Sholaka rail section.
- The final phase was executed during a rapid 120-minute traffic block to minimize passenger inconvenience.
- The system features 12 new automatic signals, two relay huts, and a state-of-the-art Hitachi MLK-II electronic interlocking system.
- Enhanced safety is ensured via Frauscher-made axle counter-based dual detection systems installed across 56 track sections.
- Engineering level crossing gates LC-554, LSC-556, and LC-556A have been fully integrated into the new framework.
Boosting Operational Capacity and Safety
By replacing the aging Absolute Block Working system with this modern automatic block signaling, the railway has moved toward continuous track circuiting. In this new setup, signals automatically turn “On” as a train passes, ensuring that a safe distance is maintained between moving trains at all times. This shift allows for more than one train to operate safely within a single block section, which is a significant departure from older, more restrictive methods.
The modernization also includes a comprehensive upgrade to the Sholaka yard, which now supports VDU-based operations, allowing for more precise control and monitoring. These technical improvements are designed to reduce train detention times and provide a major boost to overall punctuality for both passenger and freight services.

The successful implementation of this project was closely monitored by North Central Railway General Manager Shri Naresh Pal Singh and Divisional Railway Manager Shri Gagan Goyal. By increasing line capacity, this signaling upgrade ensures the Agra Division is well-prepared to meet the growing traffic demands of coming years.
