The North Eastern Railway has marked a major operational milestone with the successful launch of the ‘Awadh Mahashakti’ freight train from Gonda. This heavy-haul service represents a significant boost to regional logistics, showcasing the railway’s growing capacity to handle high-volume cargo traffic efficiently. Key highlights of this development include:
• The ‘Awadh Mahashakti’ freight train was operated with a record-setting formation of 129 wagons.
• The massive train was powered by a high-capacity three-engine configuration.
• A successful 71 km/h high-speed trial was conducted on the new third line between Gonda Junction and Gonda Kachehri.
• Gonda has been officially integrated into the upcoming Amrit Bharat Express network, specifically the Charalapalli-Gorakhpur route.
Infrastructure and Connectivity Boost
This achievement follows a period of rapid infrastructure growth in the Gonda region. On July 10, 2026, the North Eastern Railway completed a rigorous high-speed safety trial on the newly laid third line between Gonda Junction and Gonda Kachehri. The trial, conducted at 71 km/h under the supervision of the Commissioner of Rail Safety, paves the way for smoother traffic flow and reduced congestion for both freight and passenger services.
Further enhancing the region’s importance, it was announced on August 14, 2026, that Gonda will be a key stop for the newly approved Amrit Bharat Express service connecting Charalapalli in Telangana to Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh. This addition is expected to significantly improve rail connectivity between the two states.
National Rail Modernization Efforts
These local milestones are part of a broader, ambitious national initiative to modernize the Indian Railways grid. On August 20, 2026, the Union Cabinet approved four new rail multi-tracking projects. These projects, which will span across the states of West Bengal, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh, come with a massive projected budget of Rs 9,450 crore.
By the year 2030-31, these initiatives are expected to add approximately 410 kilometers of new rail lines to the national network. These upgrades are vital for enhancing freight efficiency and ensuring that the Indian Railways can better manage the increasing demand for cargo transport across the country.
