Prime Minister Narendra Modi has virtually inaugurated 75 redeveloped railway stations across 20 states, marking a major milestone in the modernization of India’s rail infrastructure. The nationwide project, which incurred an investment of approximately Rs 1,570 crore, focuses on elevating passenger comfort, safety, and operational efficiency. Several key stations in Rajasthan have undergone significant transformations to provide a world-class travel experience that integrates modern technology with regional heritage.
Key highlights of the recent railway infrastructure developments include:
- Inauguration of 75 redeveloped stations across India to enhance passenger amenities.
- Major upgrades at Gangapur City and Ganganagar stations in the Kota Division.
- Investment of Rs 25 crore specifically for the modernization of Gangapur City Railway Station.
- Transformation of Jaisalmer Railway Station incorporating traditional yellow sandstone architecture.
- Ongoing progress under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme with a target of 700 stations by 2027.
Focus on Rajasthan Infrastructure
Among the facilities officially inaugurated on July 17, 2026, Gangapur City Railway Station stands out with its new 10,000-square-meter circulating area. Passengers can now benefit from an air-conditioned waiting lounge, new lifts, escalators, and modern digital information boards. According to the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Kota, these enhancements are designed to boost local trade and tourism alongside providing a seamless travel experience.
Similarly, Jaisalmer Railway Station has been revamped at a cost of Rs 1,400 million. The station design now honors Rajasthan’s rich culture by using traditional motifs and yellow sandstone, while simultaneously offering modern accessibility features for persons with disabilities, upgraded parking, and a new foot overbridge. These improvements are part of a wider initiative that already saw stations like Barmer, Bundi, and Dausa upgraded by May 2026.
The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme Vision
Launched in December 2022, the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme is the Ministry of Railways’ flagship program to turn stations into vibrant transport hubs. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has confirmed that 261 stations have already been completed under this initiative. With a roadmap to modernize 400 stations by the end of 2026 and 700 by the end of 2027, the Indian Railways is rapidly moving toward a future where every major station serves as an engine for economic growth and regional connectivity.
