A woman with a confirmed AC 2-tier ticket was recently fined ₹2,650 by the railway authorities. Despite having a valid ticket, she boarded the train from a station other than the one mentioned on her ticket. This incident highlights a critical Indian Railways rule that many passengers often overlook during their journey.

🚨: New Train Announcement: Indian Railways to launch Barmer-Haridwar Summer Special train।

What is the rule for boarding stations

Passengers must board the train from the specific station printed on their confirmed ticket. If you plan to board from a different station, you must officially change your boarding point through the IRCTC website or at a reservation counter. Failure to do this allows the TTE to mark the seat as vacant and allot it to RAC or waitlisted passengers.

How to change your boarding point and deadlines

Indian Railways has updated its norms to make the process easier for passengers. The current rules for changing the boarding point are as follows:

Method Deadline for Change
Online via IRCTC Up to 30 minutes before scheduled departure
Reservation Counter As per counter timings and rules

What happens if you board from a different station

Boarding from a station other than the designated one without an official update can lead to heavy penalties. In the reported case, the woman was charged nearly double her original fare. Additionally, if a passenger boards the train before their designated station without a separate ticket for that segment, they are treated as traveling without a ticket and must pay the fare for that distance plus a minimum penalty of ₹250.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I change my boarding station online?

Yes, passengers can change their boarding point via the IRCTC platform up to 30 minutes before the scheduled departure of the train.

What happens if I don’t board from my original station?

The TTE has the authority to mark your seat as vacant and allot it to RAC or waitlisted passengers, meaning you lose your claim to that seat.
