Northern Railway has launched a stern crackdown on licensed porters found overcharging passengers across four major stations in the national capital. Following a series of surprise decoy operations, officials uncovered 13 instances where porters demanded fees significantly higher than the mandated rates. This initiative, spearheaded by the railway administration, aims to ensure transparency and protect passengers from financial exploitation at New Delhi, Old Delhi, Hazrat Nizamuddin, and Anand Vihar Terminal stations.
Key details of the crackdown include:
- 13 cases of financial misconduct were identified during surprise decoy operations.
- At Anand Vihar Terminal, a porter demanded ₹800 for a service with a fixed rate of ₹230.
- At New Delhi Railway Station, where the official rate for 20 kg of luggage is ₹140, passengers were being charged up to ₹300.
- At Delhi (Old Delhi) Station, five porters were caught charging between ₹300 and ₹500 for luggage despite an official fee of ₹280.
- Authorities have confiscated the badges of the offenders and initiated disciplinary proceedings for suspension.
Strict Enforcement and Passenger Rights
During the investigation, railway officials observed that several porters were engaging in aggressive bargaining tactics. Some were found accepting payments via UPI or QR codes to avoid detection, while others were failing to display their mandatory identity cards. Northern Railway has made it clear that they maintain a zero-tolerance policy regarding such malpractice. The administration is now moving to suspend the licenses of the porters involved in these violations.
How to Report Overcharging
Railway authorities are urging passengers to remain vigilant and always verify service charges against the official rate boards displayed at stations. If a porter demands more than the fixed fare, passengers should immediately report the incident.
To lodge a complaint, please note the porter’s badge number and use any of the following channels:
- The RailMadad app
- The official website: railmadad.indianrailways.gov.in
- The 139 helpline
- Contacting on-duty Station Masters, Station Managers, Commercial Staff, or the Chief Commercial Inspector.
By reporting these incidents, passengers play a crucial role in helping the Indian Railways maintain fair and transparent services for everyone.
