Indian Railways clarifies Tatkal token system status and announces major digital infrastructure upgrade

Indian Railways has officially addressed widespread confusion regarding the implementation of a nationwide token system for Tatkal ticket bookings. The national transporter confirmed that reports of a pan-India rollout of the token system starting August 1st are inaccurate. Furthermore, the railways revealed plans for a massive digital transformation of its booking infrastructure to improve passenger experience and combat ticket touting.

  • The token system for Tatkal bookings is currently limited to the Kota Division of West Central Railway and is not a nationwide policy.
  • A ₹1,000 crore Passenger Reservation System (PRS) modernization project is set to begin in August 2026.
  • A revamped, faster IRCTC website beta version is expected to launch by July 15, 2026.
  • The Advance Reservation Period (ARP) was recently reduced from 120 days to 60 days, effective July 10, 2026.

Clarification on the Token System

The confusion stemmed from a localized initiative introduced in the Kota Division around May 2026, which utilized a token system to manage passenger queues at station counters. Indian Railways clarified that this pilot program is not a template for a country-wide rollout, aiming to dispel rumors that have caused concern among daily commuters and frequent rail travelers.

Massive Digital Upgrade Ahead

Looking toward the future, the railway ministry is gearing up for its most ambitious digital overhaul yet. With an investment of approximately ₹1,000 crore, the upcoming Passenger Reservation System (PRS) modernization aims to solve perennial issues such as server crashes and slow booking speeds. This upgrade is specifically designed to limit bot abuse and strengthen security measures against illegal ticket touting, ensuring a fairer booking process for genuine passengers.

Recent Measures to Improve Booking Efficiency

These developments come on the back of several strategic policy changes implemented over the past year. Since July 2025, Indian Railways has enforced mandatory Aadhaar-based authentication and OTP verification for all Tatkal bookings. Additionally, authorized agents are prohibited from booking tickets during the first 30 minutes of the Tatkal window to give common passengers a better chance at securing confirmed seats.

Most recently, on July 10, 2026, the railways successfully reduced the Advance Reservation Period (ARP) from 120 days to 60 days. This move was specifically targeted at curbing the practice of ticket hoarding, allowing for better seat availability closer to the date of travel. Passengers are advised to keep an eye on official IRCTC channels for the upcoming interface updates.
