Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a landmark visit to Haryana and Punjab on July 17, 2026, marking a transformative day for Indian Railways. During this visit, the Prime Minister will officially inaugurate 261 redeveloped railway stations across the nation under the ‘Amrit Bharat Station Scheme’ and flag off India’s inaugural hydrogen-powered train. The event will be a major collaborative effort, with Chief Ministers from various states joining the ceremony via video conferencing to witness the modernization of the rail network.
Key updates regarding the upcoming railway infrastructure projects include:
* Inauguration of 261 stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme to modernize nationwide infrastructure.
* Launch of India’s first hydrogen-powered train operating on the Jind-Gohana-Sonipat route.
* In-person inauguration of Jalandhar Cantonment station by the Prime Minister.
* Focus on passenger amenities such as air-conditioned lounges, modern toilets, and digital displays.
* Strategic development aimed at boosting local tourism, connectivity, and economic growth.
Revamping Railway Infrastructure
The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme is designed to turn aging railway stations into world-class transport hubs. These stations will feature upgraded platforms, new lifts, and escalators, all while maintaining the unique local architectural identity of the regions. In Punjab, four stations are being highlighted: Jalandhar Cantonment, S.A.S. Nagar (Mohali), Sri Muktsar Sahib, and Sri Anandpur Sahib. Furthermore, Rajasthan’s Gangapur City Railway Station serves as a prime example of this transformation, having been redeveloped at an estimated cost of Rs 25 crore to include premium passenger comforts.
A Leap Toward Green Mobility
Perhaps the most anticipated highlight of the day is the launch of the Jind-Sonipat Hydrogen Trainset Project. This initiative marks a historic milestone in India’s journey toward sustainable and clean energy in the transport sector. Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and Cooperation Minister Arvind Sharma have both praised the project, noting that it aligns with the Viksit Bharat and Atmanirbhar Bharat visions. By operating this hydrogen train, Haryana is cementing its position as a key hydrogen hub, showcasing Indian Railways’ commitment to embracing green technology to reduce the national carbon footprint.
