Darbhanga MP Dr. Gopalji Thakur recently met with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to accelerate the development of rail infrastructure in the Mithila region. The discussions focused on expediting pending projects, establishing industrial units to boost local employment, and transforming Darbhanga Junction into a modern, airport-like transit hub. Key highlights of the proposed and ongoing developments include:
- Darbhanga Junction is undergoing a ₹340 crore redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme to create a six-story world-class facility.
- The station project, which began in August 2023, currently faces construction delays with only 10% completion reported after two years.
- Proposed infrastructure includes a 95-kilometer new rail line from Laheriasarai to Saharsa, estimated at ₹2,376 crore.
- Development work at Laheriasarai and Sakri stations is also lagging, mirroring the slow pace seen at Darbhanga Junction.
- The Bihar cabinet has sanctioned ₹138.82 crore for land acquisition to support a new logistics park and cargo hub.
Modernizing Darbhanga Junction
The vision for Darbhanga Junction is to provide passengers with amenities comparable to an airport. The redevelopment plan features a roof plaza, a premium waiting lounge, a food court, a children’s play area, and multi-level parking. Despite the ambitious scope, the project has struggled to meet its 36-month timeline. Currently, passengers are experiencing significant inconvenience due to the slow pace of work and lack of basic amenities like proper shelter at ticket counters. Samastipur Rail Division DRM Jyoti Prakash Mishra has acknowledged the delays and confirmed that officials are reviewing the project’s progress to ensure accountability.
Expanding Connectivity in the Mithila Region
Beyond station upgrades, the focus remains on regional connectivity. The proposed 95-kilometer line between Laheriasarai and Saharsa is a major highlight, which will feature a massive high-level bridge over the Kosi River, along with 14 major and 41 minor bridges. While the Railway Ministry has completed all necessary formalities, the project is currently awaiting final clearance from NITI Aayog. Furthermore, there is a growing demand from local representatives to add two additional platforms at Laheriasarai station to manage passenger traffic more effectively.
Economic Integration
The push for rail development is intrinsically linked to the region’s economic future. The government is actively working to integrate rail infrastructure with industrial growth by establishing a cargo hub and a logistics park. By acquiring 50 acres of land for these facilities, the administration aims to create a robust supply chain that supports the local economy and complements the operations of the nearby Darbhanga Airport. These efforts are expected to generate much-needed employment and transform the Mithila region into a key commercial link.
