Indian Railways is set to usher in a new era of sustainable travel with the launch of its inaugural hydrogen fuel cell-powered train. Scheduled for inauguration on July 17, 2026, this pioneering service will operate on the Jind-Sonipat section of the Northern Railway. This historic move places India among a prestigious group of nations currently testing and implementing hydrogen-based technology to decarbonize their railway networks.

  • Launch Date: July 17, 2026
  • Route: Jind-Sonipat section (Northern Railway)
  • Trainset Capacity: 10-car configuration capable of carrying 2,600 passengers
  • Propulsion: 1200 kW hydrogen fuel cell system
  • Performance: 75 kmph operational speed with a 110 kmph design limit

A Leap Toward Green Rail Mobility

The introduction of this hydrogen-powered train is a landmark moment for the national transporter. By utilizing a 1200 kW hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system, the train eliminates the reliance on traditional diesel traction, significantly reducing carbon emissions along the route. This initiative aligns with the broader national goal of achieving a greener and more environmentally friendly transportation infrastructure.

Designed to handle high-density travel, the 10-car trainset is engineered to accommodate approximately 2,600 passengers per trip. While the train has been approved to operate at a maximum speed of 75 kilometers per hour, it boasts a robust design speed of 110 kilometers per hour, ensuring that safety and efficiency remain at the forefront of this new service.

Strategic Significance for Indian Railways

The Jind-Sonipat route was strategically selected as the proving ground for this technology. By integrating hydrogen fuel cells into its operations, Indian Railways is not only testing the viability of clean energy but also setting the stage for a potential large-scale transition across non-electrified routes in the future. This project reflects a dedicated commitment to innovation, proving that the railway network can adapt to modern, eco-friendly energy solutions while maintaining the high capacity required to serve the country’s vast commuter base.

As the train prepares for its maiden journey, passengers and enthusiasts alike look forward to witnessing the impact of this clean technology on the daily commute, marking a significant milestone in India’s sustainability roadmap.
