Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the modernized Vidisha Railway Station on Friday, July 17, 2026. The station has undergone a significant transformation under the central government’s ambitious Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, marking a new chapter for rail connectivity in the region. The project was completed at a cost of Rs 29.46 crore and is set to provide a seamless travel experience for the 13,000 daily passengers who rely on this station.
- Total project cost: Rs 29.46 crore.
- Daily passenger footfall: Over 13,000.
- Nationwide scope: 75 stations across 20 states inaugurated simultaneously.
- Local impact: Part of a larger plan to redevelop 80 stations in Madhya Pradesh.
Enhanced Infrastructure and Passenger Comfort
The redevelopment of Vidisha Railway Station focuses on both aesthetic appeal and functional efficiency. Key upgrades include a redesigned circulating area to manage traffic flow more effectively and a new 12-meter-wide foot overbridge, which will significantly improve movement between platforms. Passengers will also benefit from extended covered shelters, a refreshed station façade, and modernized interiors, including refurbished waiting halls and upgraded toilets to ensure better hygiene standards.
Accessibility was a primary highlight of this renovation. The station now features ramps, tactile pathways, and step-free access to assist passengers with disabilities. Furthermore, a second entrance has been opened to provide easier access for commuters, complemented by enhanced lighting throughout the station premises to improve safety and visibility during night hours.
Vision of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme
Launched in December 2022, the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme operates on the philosophy of “Virasat Bhi, Vikas Bhi”, ensuring that modern infrastructure development does not come at the cost of local cultural heritage. These stations are being engineered to meet the growing demands of rail travel for the next 40 to 50 years.
This nationwide initiative saw an investment of Rs 1,570 crore in this phase alone. In Madhya Pradesh, the government is investing nearly Rs 3,000 crore to upgrade 80 railway stations. By modernizing these transit hubs, the Indian Railways aims to stimulate local trade, boost regional tourism, and significantly enhance economic activity across the state.
