Indian Railways launches new parcel initiatives to support fruit and vegetable traders

Indian Railways is taking significant steps to transform the logistics of perishable goods by launching dedicated parcel service initiatives for fruit and vegetable traders. Led by the East Central Railway’s Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya (PDU) division, this campaign, which began on July 20-21, 2026, aims to shift agricultural transport from road to rail by providing demand-driven, efficient, and reliable solutions for farmers and merchants.

  • Targeted outreach: PDU division is collecting data on consignment origins, destinations, and volumes to tailor transport solutions.
  • Key stations included: PDU Junction, Bhabua Road, Sasaram, Dehri-on-Sone, Anugrah Narayan Road, Gaya Junction, Japla, and Bikramganj.
  • Easy access: Farmers and traders can contact Chief Ticket Inspector Anil Kumar at 9651450139 for assistance.
  • Kisan Rail legacy: Continued support via the 50% freight subsidy scheme for 42 notified fruits and vegetables.

Streamlining Logistics for Farmers

The PDU division is actively engaging with producers in the Gaya region and surrounding areas to understand their specific logistical hurdles. By analyzing transport regularity and volume needs, the railway intends to optimize its parcel services to ensure farm produce reaches major cities and other states with minimal transit time. This effort is designed to make rail transport a more viable and cost-effective alternative to road freight for small and large-scale agricultural merchants.

Building on Proven Schemes

These new efforts complement the highly successful Kisan Rail scheme, which was launched on August 7, 2020. This program offers a 50% freight subsidy funded by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, with no minimum quantity restrictions, making it ideal for small farmers. Furthermore, the railway is upgrading its infrastructure to include refrigerated parcel vans to maintain the freshness of perishables during transit.

Modernizing Freight and Parcel Services

Indian Railways is also embracing technology to improve user experience. The service now features fully digital, transparent tracking for parcels. For larger logistics, the Joint Parcel Product-Rapid Cargo Service (JPP-RCS) is already operational with eight pairs of trains. These services guarantee strict delivery timelines—ranging from 12 hours for 400 km to 48 hours for over 1,500 km—with a 10% freight refund provided in the event of delays. Additionally, recent reforms announced by Rail Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on July 14, 2026, focus on shifting key commodities to closed containers, ensuring better safety and a reduced environmental footprint for the nation’s supply chain.
